The boys spend the night watching the house as they think it might move again. DJ and Chowder both think that the house is haunted by Mr. Nebbercracker's disappearance, or it is experiencing poltergeist activity. To make matters worse, Nebbercracker's departure causes Constance's spirit within the house to awaken, and with Nebbercracker gone, there is no one to keep her calm. While they agree with people that DJ might be crazy, they nevertheless love him and try to do what's best for him.
Chowder, DJ's best friend, accidentally loses his new basketball in Nebbercracker's yard. The old man flies into a fierce rage, yelling at the boy before collapsing, seeming to have suffered a heart attack, and being taken away in an ambulance. In the evening, DJ gets phone calls from Nebbercracker's house, even though nobody is there. He believes that Nebbercracker's ghost has made the house come to life. DJ overhears Bones talking about a kite which he lost to Mr. Nebbercracker when he was a small boy. When Bones leaves for home, he sees the kite which he lost long ago in the doorway of Nebbercracker's house.

Afterward, while DJ sneaks away, Bones (who had lost his kite when he was 10 years old) expresses his anger and sadness over his stolen kite on Nebbercracker's house by damaging the lawn. When Constance sees this, she proceeds to possess his kite within the basement (the stomach) and uses it to lure Bones into the house. As the boys leave, Chowder states that Nebbercracker will find a way to get his life back on track. DJ tells Nebbercracker it is time to let Constance go, but she overhears. The house breaks free from the foundation, with trees to support it (the arms), and chases the group to a nearby construction site.
DJ convinces his friends to keep up with their search for the house's furnace. There, they discovered Nebbercracker’s old explosives and photographs depicting Nebbercracker when he was young alongside his wife Constance when she was alive. DJ stated that Zee and Bones had a conversation about Nebbercracker’s past life and assumed that he devoured Constance much to Jenny’s disgust.
Mr. Nebbercracker, appears to be mean and heartless to anyone on his lawn, but only because he is afraid his house will attack the person. If any object lands on his lawn, he takes it, and keeps it in his basement. He is most likely in his sixties or seventies, as he's pretty slow on his feet. His ongoing protection of children from Constance throughout the years without revealing what his house really is has made him an unsung hero. The day before Halloween, DJ Walters' parents go off to a convention, leaving him in the care of a babysitter named Elizabeth, who prefers to be called Zee. Zee has no interest in looking after DJ, preferring instead to spend time with her boyfriend Bones.

Aware that Constance's spirit made the house come alive, Horace tried to keeping people away by pretending to hating them for their safety. In the basement they find a collection of toys accumulated from Nebbercracker's lawn, as well as a door that opens to a shrine containing the body of Nebbercracker's wife, Constance the Giantess, encased in cement. The game culminates in them trying to deal with the furnace, which Jenny is initially too scared to do, but overcomes her fear with encouragement from DJ and Chowder (in the GameBoy Advance version). DJ and Jenny later meet up in the basement and decide to just get out of the house. Against his friends' protests, DJ tries to talk some sense with Nebbercracker about the truth behind his wrathful and suspicious behavior. Nebbercracker was at first angry after he has discovered the truth, but eventually relents and tell them both his and Constance's story. The trio see Nebbercracker with Constance's ghost for the last time before she fades away. DJ apologizes to Nebbercracker for the loss of his house and wife, but Nebbercracker thanks DJ and the kids for freeing him and Constance. That night, children in their Halloween costumes are lined up at the site of Nebbercracker's house, where DJ, Chowder and Jenny help him return the toys to their owners. Jenny's parents pick her up, and DJ and Chowder go trick-or-treating, which they previously thought they were too old for.
